Synopsis

The play opens in Washington with Mrs Sally Adams, a Washington socialite, being sworn is as Ambassador to the Grand Duchy Of Lichtenburg. The scene moves to Mrs Adams’ farewell party at which it becomes obvious that Sally Adams has no qualifications for the post she has been given, except as a fundraiser and hostess for the Democrats.

At the party, we meet the main US characters: millionaire, Henry Gibson and his son, Kenneth, who has been appointed to Sally Adams’ staff, as well as Senators Gallagher and Brockbank and Congressman Wilkins.

The scene changes to introduce us to Lichtenburg, a quaint little Duchy that is in striking contrast to the sophisticated United States of America . We meet the main characters in the Lichtenburg story.  Maxwell Pemberton is the Charge d’Affaires at the Embassy. Cosmo Constantine, Hugo Tantinnin and Sebastian Sebastian are members of the Lichtenburg Cabinet which changes every week and sometimes every day. The Grand Duke and the Cabinet, except Cosmo Constantine, want an American loan because as Cosmo says - “babies and cheese” are their main industries. Cosmo wants to modernise the Duchy and thinks a lack of money will force change, so he does not want the loan.

The US begins by declining to give the loan, but Sally, infatuated with Cosmo and wanting to help, convinces them to put the loan through.  Sally becomes embroiled in the politics of the whole situation and is eventually recalled.

Meanwhile, there is a stir in royal circles because of the romance which develops between Princess Maria and Kenneth Gibson.
